Chop onions into long slices.

Chop onions into long slices.
Heat the oil on medium high in a saute pan, and when the oil is shimmering add the onions.
Saute for 8-10 minutes and then sprinkle with salt and sugar. Continue to cook until the onions are brown.
Serve on top of steak or with chicken from the grill.
